#355: NO-Vember, Meeting Frasier, Picture This! & New York Comic Conked!
+ Ed Subitsky Rizzoli Sketchbook & Morris preps for Halloween.
I hope this fine afternoon finds you well. Procrastinating in your inbox while you should definitely be doing something else. That’s the optimum setting for reading this newsletter, and I’m glad you’re here.
I feel like I should mention that today’s cartoon is not posted in relation to the events in your newsfeed. Just a funny idea. Kind of like this one…
(lol remember Buzzfeed?)
For the past 5 years, I’ve run something called the “NO-vember Challenge”.
It’s one email every day of November to help you say NO to one thing for every day of the month. YES is easy. Learning how to say NO is hard.
If this is the kind of thing that interests you…
And now, on to…
1. I randomly met Frasier in a cigar lounge deep in the heart of Queens.
I won’t spill the full can of beans until the fully illustrated version of the story drops on
’s Substack this Friday. She was the one who invited me to this deeply surreal soiré.Until then… here’s a photo of yours truly tossing some salad, scrambled eggs, and clippy zingers about Sideshow Bob around with Kelsey Grammer on the night the Frasier reboot premiered on Paramont+
Note: If you have a Paramount+ Subscription, don’t cancel it just yet! I have a surprise coming for Christmas…
1. Picture This!
On Friday night I’ll be back in Brooklyn, scribbling my heart out at Union Hall for Picture This! Each month for the past 10 years, we fling artists at comedians and see what kind of depravity sticks to the wall. (Shows are in LA and NY.) Here’s some coverage of it in the New York Times from earlier this year!
2. New York Comic Conked!
I’m completely exhausted, after 4 solid days of sitting in a booth and drawing free pictures of kids from people’s phones into my book. Does that mean I won’t do one of your kid? Absolutely not. Send them my way.
For one of the days, Scott joined me for the fun: which ended in us going to the pub, reeling from the incessant throb of deafening animé trailers on a perpetual loop.
3. Substack Event!
Last week a bunch of New York Substack-writers met up at an art gallery in Brooklyn to eat food, drink wine, and pretend we know who each other are. (It’s hard to tell people’s faces from their Publication logos!) Take a peek at some of the snaps:
Now listen ‘ear…
This week, Part 2 of 2 of my conversation with
dropped on his Podcast— we talk about making it as an artist in the 21st century, and, well…. he actually drew a mind-map of the entire conversation! This week’s Sketchbook:
I pulled out an old sketchbook from nearly 10 years ago to find a drawing I did of Lorenzo; a doorman who used to work at the now-closed Carlton Hotel on Madison Avenue.
Process Junkie
While I do love the convenience of a Wacom tablet/Xenselabs tablet/iPad pro or whatever you like using… I can’t ever replicate the joy of using analog tools. I’m starting a new Substack in 2024 called “Process Junkie” to explore all of the joys of the Process of making art. If you’re interested in that kind of thing, you can sign up here.
On Friday:
I went to see Owen Kline and Mark Newgarden interview cartoonist Ed Subitzky at Rizzoli Books. Click here to read my review of Owen’s film about trying to become a cartoonist:
If you enjoy my work, there’s a hefty chance you might like the people I enjoy, too. Each week, I share a new person who tickles my fancy. I’ve begun to compile all of them into one place, for you to peruse at your leisure!
Take a look at them here…
Until next time,
Your pal,
Jason
“Halloween Toy— er… “Decorations” please yes?”
I love the cartoons this week! Also, I want to see what costume Morris chooses for Halloween. 😄
Love your toons...🖌️✒️🖋️✏️🖊️🗞️it’s an art! 🖼️
