#375: The New York College of Art & Design, A More-than-decent Proposal & A New Waking Up Portrait!
+ Morris bunkers down for the storm...
…from under a gigantic puddle of New York bin water. I hope you’re having a great week and keeping dry. The rain here is getting into Noah’s Ark territory. Pigeons will start evolving into penguins before long.
A More-than-decent Proposal:
Back in 2022, I received a note from a reader of my work with an interesting request.
She’d been thinking about getting engaged to her partner for a while, but said the whole—‘getting down on one knee in real life’—thing felt a bit awkward.
Both of them are in love with New York, and their neighbourhood in particular, and never plan on leaving. So, she landed on a creative way to pop the question: to have a New Yorker cartoonist draw it. (As a New Yorker cartoon!)

Viviano & Chatfield Invade NYC High School of Art & Design
Last week, I had a great time as a guest presenter at the New York College of Art & Design. I’ve presented there before, and it never ceases to amaze me just how absurdly uninhibited (and wildly talented) kids can be at that age. I wish I had a high school of Art & Design growing up in Perth. All we had was an old shed with a guy named Gavin who would shout random facts about fine art through the air holes in the door.
I thought I was being all generous and giving until I arrived to find that longtime MAD Art Director and good pal Sam Viviano had already been there since 8 am. He’d presented nearly half a dozen times already that day. We both spoke to the seniors in the black box theatre about all things cartooning, illustration, and sage career advice. It was right after lunch, so it was admirable of them to keep their food down after listening to us!
New Illustrations in Waking Up:
I’ve been illustrating for the Waking Up app for a few years now, and a great new session that just dropped from Shinzen Young is worth a listen. I like how his portrait turned out. You can read more about my thoughts on meditation here.
Yes, I’m still selling prints & original art!
Some of you were asking last week if I was still selling originals and prints of my cartoons. The answer is yes! And you can find them here.
This week’s Sketchbook is a sneak peek at my warm-up pencils before I dive into the very first pages of my next book! (Stay tuned for more on this…)
While I do love the convenience of an iPad/Wacom/Xenselabs tablet… I can’t ever replicate the joy of using analog tools. I’m launching a new Substack called “Process Junkie” to explore all of the joys of the Process of making art. If you’re interested in that kind of thing, you can sign up here.
Until next time,
Your pal,
Jason
