…Coming to you from the deafening construction site below my apartment window, welcome to Issue #432 of New York Cartoons!

1. Survey Response
I’m grateful to all of you who completed my quick survey this past week. I do that about once a year to get a sense of who’s reading and what you might like to see more/less of. If you haven’t responded yet and have a spare 10 seconds, you can still get a word in edgewise here.
I loved hearing from you, and I’m glad many of you said that this newsletter is “An emotional, humorous break from all the craziness in the world” —And the craziness certainly ain’t in short supply these days…
2. Live Stream Of Consciousness
Thank you also to everyone who tuned into my live stream on Thursday afternoon for my first “Draw Me Anything!” If you missed it, you can watch the replay here. I aim to do these every Thursday from 3pm US EDT.
Tune in the same time this week for DMA#2!
Jason Chatfield is going live on Apr 10: "DMA#2: Draw Me Anything!"
3. Big News!
I’m now the Cartoon Editor at a new publication…
I’m excited to share that this month I’ve joined the team at
as their new Cartoon Editor! They publish regularly online and quarterly in print. Stay tuned for more details about their first print edition— if you’re a professional cartoonist, expect an email from me in the coming weeks… (Hit me in the comments or reply to this email if you’re interested in contributing.)I’ve been nervously counting presales numbers on the new book, trying to get as many people to order it ahead of the launch on April 29th as possible. If you are a dog owner or know anyone with a dog who might like this book, please consider ordering a copy. It makes an excellent gift for anyone who loves their fur babies.
✍️ Hand-Lettering Live Stream Tomorrow
I’ll be a guest on
’s fantastic substack tomorrow at 4pm US EDT discussing hand-lettering, and the joys of writing by hand. Take a look below for more information:This week’s Sketchbook is a small selection from a live caricaturing gig I was booked at on Saturday night for an awards show at the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City… the last time I was at an awards show at that hotel, well… iykyk.
Nick Hornby’s Listening Party
I got to attend Nick Hornby’s excellent Listening party on Thursday night— organized by the folks at
.
I drew a few portraits of Nick, which I’ll be discussing over on
this week. Subscribe to see more. You can read Hornby’s excellent writing about it here.
The Michael J Fox Foundation MVP Gala
The man behind the Team Cul De Sac fundraising team for Parkinson’s Research invited me along to this past weekend’s MJF event for the fundraising MVPs in New York. It was great to catch up and talk about one of the greatest cartoonists who ever worked in the field, the late Richard Thompson, who we lost to Parkinson’s Disease in 2016 at the age of 58. You can read my piece on Richard here.
If you’d like to donate to the cause, you can do so over at Team Cul de Sac here.
Rejected Shorts!
Thank you to everyone who came out to watch me tell my story of a rejected New Yorker cartoon that I fought for over the course of 3 years, at Rejected Shorts this past weekend. It’s a great regular show that you can catch next time here.
