450. Meet Me in NYC (I'll draw you!), Cartoonist Awards in Boston & Sofia Warren on this week's DMA!
#450: Plus! Hilary F. Campbell recap, Morris approves of pigeon mugs, & More!
Hey again, friend.
Welcome to Issue #450 of New York Cartoons. As I’m writing this, I’m unpacking my kit at the new New York Google HQ, drawing digital portraits of the people all day. This is one of several gigs I’ll be doing in New York this week, including one I’m really excited about in my old neighbourhood, West Chelsea!
Come and Meet Me (and other New Yorkers) in Person!
I know I spend a lot of time talking to you about what’s happening in NYC, but this month, I want to actually see your faces. If you haven’t yet heard, from 6-8pm this Thursday (21st August), City happenings: something fun to do everyday in New York is hosting a meet-up. There will be drinks, snacks, and custom hand-drawn portraits by me! Drop by solo or with a friend. See you there!
👉 RSVP here before Thursday.
Reubens in Beantown!
I’m fresh back from Boston, where the 79th Annual National Cartoonists Society Reuben Awards were held with great fanfare and japery. This year’s cartoonist of the year was Mark Parisi. You can see his great work here.
It’s always great catching up with my NCS family, including the inimitable, prolific New Yorker cartoonist Mort Gerberg and his wife Judith. These two party animals have more energy than I did in my thirties…
I was running the AV of the show from the back of the room— something I’ve been doing for years now because I’m an idiot and can’t just sit still in a room. All of the Past Presidents of the NCS who were present stood for a photo. I am, of course, the only one both blinking and drinking.

Morris approves!
He won’t drink his morning cup of toilet water out of just any old receptacle. No, Morris insists on starting his day with the all-new official New York Cartoons Pigeon Mug! Available at not one single good retailer in your area…
If you want to support my work, please take out a premium subscription (just $1 per week).
The Sketchbook I’m sharing with you this week is a selection of the sketches I did of people’s dogs as gifts this past week. If you have a friend with a dog, send me a photo and I’ll draw them into the book for you.
For this week’s edition of Draw Me Anything, I’ll be speaking with my friend and fellow New Yorker cartoonist,
— Sofia has a Substack called and a heap of other stuff to share when we talk at NOON this Friday, August 22nd.From Peanuts to Prilosex: An Hour with Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell
I spent a very quick hour yesterday talking to
—New Yorkercartoonist, comedian, burlesque performer (stage name: Anita Prilosex), and owner of what might be the most voluminous sketchbook collection in Brooklyn. Which, considering the artistic density of that borough, is saying something.
Hilary joined me for another edition of Draw Me Anything, streaming in from the roof of her apartment, where she lives with Margie (her black lab who's more well-travelled than most diplomats) and Odie (a dog so fluffy he can barely run). We covered everything from her massive new book to earthquake survival techniques to the great menstruation war of 2023 that broke out in her Instagram comments section.
