Don't forget! DMA#28 Live Wednesday @ 12:00pm with Special Guest New Yorker cartoonist Tom Toro!
Join me tomorrow for a FREE livestream at 12:00pm Eastern for a conversation with Tom Toro—New Yorker cartoonist and Author of a brand new book Out Today!
That’s right, Wednesday at 12:00 pm Eastern, I’ll be drawing and speaking with New Yorker cartoonist and author !
This is Tom’s second appearance on the show, and if the first session was any indication, we’re in for a proper conversation about the craft. Last time, we covered everything from pen nibs to the peculiar psychological warfare of the New Yorker cartoon caption contest. Tomorrow, I’m curious to dig into his process—the man’s published a debut collection of 15 years of his work, writes a Substack called “Undiscovered Masterpieces,” and somehow finds time to illustrate children’s books between existential cartoons about capitalism.
He has a great one out called “And to Think We Started as a Book Club” — a collection of hilarious cartoons that have never been put together anywhere else.
Look, I could pretend this is all altruistic—sharing knowledge, building community, advancing the noble art of cartooning. And sure, there’s some of that. But mostly, I’m talking to someone who’s published over 200 cartoons in The New Yorker since 2010, and I’d be an idiot not to learn everything I can while he’s generous enough to sit in front of a camera with me. You get to eavesdrop on that conversation. Everyone wins.
Set an alarm. Pour yourself something nice. Grab your sketchbook if you’re feeling ambitious.
What is a DMA?
You've probably heard of an AMA (Ask Me Anything), and sure, that's always interesting. But I figured since you probably don't want to just see my face staring back at you for an hour, it might be more interesting if I point my camera at the drawing board and draw away while you ask me questions, make requests, and I can share tips on the creative process!
See you tomorrow!
Your pal,
P.S. If you’ve got specific questions for Tom, drop them in the comments here or in the chat during the stream. The man’s remarkably patient with my rambling questions, but I suspect he’d appreciate some variety.
P.P.S. If you’re somehow not cartoonist-ed out after today, I’m going live beforehand at 10 am EST with
to do some watercolour work.
