Jason, I just love this story! The artist bond is strong within all of us. Thank you for sharing it on this Fourth of July. It’s good to know we have some wonderful fellow citizens like you, to counterbalance the you know who’s.
Love your journey! I lived across from bullet space in 311 for 10 years . Met Andrew C and his brother - his brothers daughter was our babysitter for awhile! He was good to talk to, but I hope you also met Ricky on the corner and Cowboy Pimp ( May of been missing) and Sammy the super and a whole host of older locals that had been there since birth! Also , if you ever met the German photographer on 4th street (blanking on her name- not Martha maybe Marla..?) who’s been there since the 70s had amazing photos from throughout the eras. So much amazing history on that block! And that neighborhood! So much Art happened and incubated there! Glad to see it recognized whenever it is!
Thanks for sharing! That’s great. I was finishing up my MFA at SVA when I first moved in with my lady. I did a drawing project on the buildings (some people) that I wanted to capture in their current state, so I was sitting drawing on a stool on the sidewalk on 3rd between C & D a lot for a month or so. Better than the drawings that came out of it Was great how many people I got to meet and talk to & how it gave me a better connection with the street and residents. Still amazed and thankful at how welcoming and warm most people were once they saw me drawing, from the dealers and gangsters to the old artists and musicians and lifelong residents. Really was a magical place for me.
Yes, I absolutely love that neighbourhood and I miss living there. I’m in Hels’s kitchen now and another fifth floor walk up. Lots of character characters up here, but nothing like alphabet City.

Oh, Jason. What a story. Can't wait to read more of your life story in the US.
This is so wholesome, you really did get a rental just for being such a great artist!
Out of the frying pan and in to the fire.
🤨
After reading this, Jason, I subscribed as a founder.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love you more, E. Jean Carroll… 🥹
