Scribbling Kids at Bellevue Hospital, Live Gig Sketchbook, & 200th New Yorker Caption Contest Pod!
#435: Sergio Aragonés, DMA#6, The Red Door & Morris gets his shill on!
Welcome to Issue #435 of New York Cartoons!
It’s been a big week over here! The launch of the book on Tuesday, the launch of the Waking Up Collaboration yesterday, and the launch of my alarm clock out the window this morning…
• A Glutton for Publishing:
I’ve been at the drawing board working on the next book as the current one is released… probably not the wisest idea, but I’m still excited to share it with you— it’s all about being a “Real” New Yorker… Stay tuned for more.
• Get your Pup Sketch in the new book!
You can now get your pupper personally sketched in a copy of the new book! Just send me a picture of your furry little friend and click this link to order.
• Speaking of the book….
We’d love you to join us for the big book launch event we’re holding tomorrow at the AKC Museum of the Dog on Park Avenue!
Details here:
• Draw Me Anything #6:
To hear more about the book and watch me live draw your requests, make sure you tune in today at 3pm Eastern for Draw Me Anything #6!
• Idiot Rising
It was nice to wake up to see that the global rising leaderboard for Humor is broken, and this newsletter is somehow number #7??
(Don’t worry, I’ve logged the bug with Substack.)
Another cartoonist launched a dog book this week!
Last night, I got to attend the launch of Harry Bliss’ new graphic memoir dedicated to his dog, Penny. It was also an exploration of his creative process and his commitment to cartooning. We traded books at the signing, and I did a sketch of Penny on the flyleaf. Penny was a good dog.
You can order Harry’s book here.
Comedians in Pubs Getting Beer
Thank you to everyone who came out to Old Mate’s pub for the show last week to raise money for the KIDS Foundation. It was completely sold out, and the show was a huge hit! I hope they do more comedy at Old Mates— it’s easily one of the best bars in New York. (but I’m a touch biased…)
The Cartoon Caption Contest Podcast celebrates its 200th episode with a giant dork as their guest
I raced straight from the gig at Old Mates to join the gang for their anniversary festivities. We discussed the current caption contest, my upcoming book, and dissected the elusive art of writing jokes that are actually funny. Listen here.
I scooted over to Bellevue Hospital with my fellow scribblers on Saturday to draw Spring-themed cartoons for the kids stuck in not-so-great situations. The organization that ran the event is called the Inkwell Foundation. The group was started by artists to use drawing to bring laughter, creativity, and encouragement to kids braving illness and hardship.
From Inkwell Founder, Elizabeth Winter:
It was so beautiful to spend the day creating with the kids at Bellevue Hospital! We’re so proud to have partnered with this special center focused on making sure children going through severe medical challenges have every opportunity for joy, bonding, and creative self-expression.
You can make a donation to the Inkwell Foundation (which is a 401(c)(3) non-profit) by clicking the link below:
This week’s Sketchbook is a small selection of sketches from last week’s national Bring-Your-Kid-To-Work Day event in midtown. I was drawing kids up by Grand Central. Thanks to the folks at ArtsClub NYC for setting up the event!
A Great night with the GOAT!
My favourite living cartoonist, Sergio Aragonés was teaching the NCS members about his life and process on Monday night. He truly is the fastest, most prolific cartoonist I’ve ever met. If you’ve read literally any issue of MAD since January 1963, you’ve seen his work. Learn more about the NCS here.
Call and Response: The Red Door:
I posted this photo from my morning walk on Notes this past week and said:
"Alright, Substackers. Here’s a writing prompt for you from my morning walk with Morris… A short story based on the occupants of this building. Go.”
This is what came back through the window, wrapped around a brick…
(Thanks to !)
…and also “Please buy my Dad’s book before I eat it!”
