Hello, friend! Quick one this week….
My friend Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell, New Yorker cartoonist, comedian and all-round menace, runs a show at the Greenpoint Comedy Club called Cartoon Strips. It’s a variety hour in the old-school sense: stand-up, burlesque, a live band, and, in the corner, a cartoonist drawing the whole mess as it happens.
At the end of the night, the drawing goes into a raffle, and one lucky stranger walks home with an original New Yorker cartoonist’s work under their arm, slightly damp from the bar…

The last time I went, I sat up the back with Emily Flake while Drew Dernavich sat up front with a sketchbook and did the honest work. I looked over in the dark corner, and there was Will Kiley Santino, sketching away also. A hefty chunk of the New Yorker’s cartoon contributors were in that room, and not one of us was being paid to be there. I started drawing anyway.
It feels like what I imagine a vaudeville night felt like a hundred years ago, if vaudeville had craft cocktails. Jeremy Pinsly and his wife Kayla run the room like they’re having you over, which, before they opened the club, they literally were.

This Sunday’s edition is part of the New York Comedy Festival: Negin Farsad, James Tom, Candy Lawrence, Anne Hinged, and music from The Shmuks. My good friend and fellow New Yorker cartoonist Ellis Rosen is on the bill, and I’ll be there drawing the show. Officially, this time.
I’ll be arriving straight from the Upper East Side, where at 5pm I’m hosting a comedy show at a club called Comic Strip Live. So the plan is: host a comedy show at Comic Strip, then draw a comic strip at Cartoon Strips.
My life has become a caricature. I’d draw it, but it’s already done.
Come say hi. Bring a pen. You never know.
