461. Hard Questions at Stanford, Ronny Hates Hasan, & Dooley joins Substack!
Plus! An Evening with Sam Harris, A Chat with Bob Eckstein, & Morris learns to meditate
Hey again, friend.
Welcome to Issue #461 of New York Cartoons. I took a little break down in sunny Florida for Thanksgiving, but I’m back on deck in New York, freezing my arse off and hurtling inexorably towards the end of December like a freight train with broken brakes. So much to share this week, including two great comedy shows, thoughts on so many things, and a great chat with my pal The Bob, so I’m just going to kick on!
As always, I’m so grateful to those of you who have generously upgraded from this free version to the Paid version to ensure I can keep working hard on bringing you the work I love (and hopefully you enjoy reading.) It means a lot. If you want, you can always upgrade at anytime for a buck a week — or if you already have, Gift Subscriptions make a great giving idea for the holidays.
Here’s what a recent subscriber said when she upgraded (thank you, Kate!)
If you do feel generous and want to give a little something, it would make Morris the Holiday Goblin marginally less grumpy.
The Sketchbook I’m sharing with you this week is a selection of the sketches I did of peoples’ dogs as gifts this past week. If you have a friend with a dog, send me a photo and I’ll draw them into the book for you. I absolutely love drawing Wheatons— this one, Fiona, is one of my all-time faves. (Also, Leia).
I had so much fun signing books in Williamsport last weekend. Here are some highlights!
On AI, Art, and the Young Students Who Keep Asking the Hard Questions
At the conclusion of my guest lecture at Stanford last week, a young Design student raised her hand and asked the question everyone asks now, usually with the same worried tilt of the head:
I went to see my old pal Ronny utterly annihilating his mortal enemy Hasan Minaj at the Beacon Theatre this week. I’m not exaggerating when I say I haven’t laughed so hard at a comedy show since moving to New York. It’s the best show.
They’re still doing the tour- you can book at ronnychieng.com if you’re interested. Oh! And hanging out in the greenroom afterwards, we got to hang out with his opening act, Mike Birbiglia!
Speaking of comedy shows, one of the two best regular shows in NYC is happening on December 9 at Flophouse Comedy Club — YIKES COMEDY! They are offering 50% off tickets with code GOBBLE. There is a limited amount, so book your tickets today. The headliner is my pal, fellow Substacker and outstanding comedian
!3. Lastly - I’m drawing tonight on the show I co-produce at Union Hall; Picture This! The show is at 10 pm at Union Hall in Brooklyn, with an INSANE line-up of artists and comics. Book your tickets early for a discount. Sales close soon!
I really enjoyed my chat with Cartoonist and Author Bob Eckstein. Click below to watch it!
How Bob Eckstein Outdrew Me With a Stick Dipped in Ink
There are two kinds of cartoonists in the world. The first kind look like they live in a studio. The second kind look like they live for their studio. Bob Eckstein, as it turns out, somehow lives inside both.
My writing and podcast partner,
has finally jumped on the S.S. Substack— Go follow his musings on everything from money to models, to the rising cost of the All-Clad 350 BTU Immersion Blender... Subscribe below.

The You’re Not Real Dog Owner book is a beautifully illustrated and funny book. The illustration of your dog or a friend’s dog inside makes for very memorable and personalized gift to yourself or for a friend!
Morris is so Zen!
